Obama says his budget will help prevent future woes

Obama news conference: President says his budget will help prevent future woes
You've got to spend money to make money. Or at least to get the country out of recession.
That's the gist of some of President Obama's prepared remarks he's delivering right now in his second White House news conference. "Spend," however, is not the word of choice. According to the president, the key is to "invest."

An example:
The budget I submitted to Congress will build our economic recovery on a stronger foundation, so that we do not face another crisis like this 10 or 20 years from now. We invest in the renewable sources of energy that will lead to new jobs, new businesses, and less dependence on foreign oil.

We invest in our schools and our teachers so that our children have the skills they need to compete with any workers in the world. We invest in reform that will bring down the cost of healthcare for families, businesses and our government. And in this budget, we have made the tough choices necessary to cut our deficit in half by the end of my first term –- even under the most pessimistic estimates.

And in case you didn't get the point, Obama has more to say about investing:
At the end of the day, the best way to bring our deficit down in the long run is not with a budget that continues the very same policies that have led to a narrow prosperity and massive debt. It’s with a budget that leads to broad economic growth by moving from an era of borrow and spend to one where we save and invest.

Chiranjeevi may contest 3 seats in show of strength

Actor-turned politician Chiranjeevi, who formed his Praja Rajyam party with much fanfare ihn 2008, has hinted that he may contest from three constituencies of Andra Pradesh, making it a grand show of strength in front of the electorate.

Talking to reporters, he said that he might contest from one assembly seat each in Andhra, Rayalseema and Telanagana regions. He will be repeating history, if the PRP president does that. N T Rama Rao, founder of Telugu Desam Party (TDP), used to contest from three constituencies to drive home the point that his popularity spans the entire state. He made a confirmation that he would contest from a seat in his native West Godavari district and Tirupati in Rayalseema.

He also said that he will choose Nalgonda in Telangana, if he would find possibility of contesting from a third constituency. Chiranjeevi alleged that the Congress party had not done justice to backward classes in allotment of party tickets. He also pointed out that Congress fielded only 66 candidates from backward classes though there were 109. This shows the insincerity of Congress in ensuring social justice.

NASA::Powering Up the Station

During the STS-119 mission's first spacewalk, astronauts Richard Arnold and Steve Swanson (out of frame) connected bolts to permanently attach the S6 truss segment to S5. The spacewalkers plugged in power and data connectors to the truss, prepared a radiator to cool it, opened boxes containing the new solar arrays and deployed the Beta Gimbal Assemblies, containing masts that support the solar arrays.

The View From Above:
This overhead view of Discovery's crew cabin, as well as part of its payload bay and docking system, was taken during the Expedition 18 crew's examination of the shuttle prior to docking with the International Space Station. Before docking, STS-119 commander Lee Archambault flew the shuttle through a Rendezvous Pitch Maneuver or backflip to allow the station crew to photograph Discovery's heat shield.

Montana plane crash kills 17, including children

Flames and billowing smoke rise after a single-engine private passenger plane crashed into a cemetery, on approach to an airport in Butte, Montana, killing 17 people, March 22, 2009.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A single-engine plane, reported to be carrying children on a ski vacation to the Rocky Mountains, crashed on approach to an airport in western Montana on Sunday, killing 17 people, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

A photograph taken by an eyewitness moments after the crash and broadcast on CNN showed a fireball blazing through a grove of trees near a cemetery a short distance from the Bert Mooney Airport in Butte, Montana, where the plane went down.

A reporter from the Montana Standard newspaper cited local emergency officials as saying the plane was carrying a group of young children en route to a ski vacation in Bozeman, Montana, southeast of the crash site and about 50 miles north of Yellowstone National Park.

An FAA spokesman in Seattle, Mike Fergus, put the preliminary death toll from the crash at 17 people. He said there was no indication of any survivors on the plane, nor of casualties on the ground.

He said authorities on the scene had reported to the FAA that a number of children were on the plane.

A Los Angeles-based FAA official said the plane had taken off from the northern California town of Oroville, and crashed on final approach at the airport in Butte.

Fergus told CNN the pilot had filed a flight plan showing a final destination of Bozeman but canceled that at some point and headed instead for Butte. The plane, a single-engine turboprop Pilatus PC12, crashed about 500 feet from the airport while attempting to land and burst into flames.

An official of the Butte-Silver Bow County Fire Department reached by telephone declined comment, as did an airport spokesman, both of whom referred queries back to the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board.

Tips to speed up defrag operations in Windows XP.

A simple way to speed up a defrag operation in Microsoft Windows XP is to restart the system before you launch the Defrag application. This allows the operating system to clear out the swap/paging file (may require a change in configuration for ultimate effect) and to reset it to the default size. This lets Defrag focus strictly on the necessary data on the hard disk, without having to stop and manage a huge swap file loaded with unneeded data.

Another approach to speeding up a defrag operation in Windows XP is to configure it to occur immediately upon startup. You can do so easily with a simple registry edit.
Note: Editing the Windows Registry is not without risk. Please save yourself some aggravation and back up your Windows Registry before you do any editing.
With the disclaimer out of the way, follow these steps to start a defrag operation immediately upon startup:

Launch the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe)
Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\RunOnce
Right-click the RunOncesubkey and select New String Value
Name the value Defrag and press [Enter] twice
Type Defrag.exe c: /f in the Value Data text box, and click OK
Close the Registry Editor and restart Windows
The defrag operation will begin when you type in your password and press [Enter]. (Keep in mind that values added to the RunOnce key are removed immediately after the command has been run.)

Note: This tip applies to both Windows XP Home and Professional editions.

The safest tech jobs in a recession

Web development and IT security still set for growth

Since the dotcom boom and bust of the late 90s, techies have enjoyed the best part of a decade on the green side of the fence, with growth in every sector year on year.

Almost five percent of the UK workforce are IT wage slaves of some description, with three quarters of folks working with a computer in their daily grind. So, when Google makes cuts and Microsoft starts laying off staff, you know it's time to start worrying.
Fortunately, our investigation suggests there are more than just one or two bullet-proof careers in technology.

A recent survey by research company Markit Economics for KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation suggests that, despite the largest downturn in demand for new staff since 1997, software programmers are still sought after.

The big growth areas are in web application development, with PHP, .net and C++ expertise particularly prized. We'd hazard an educated guess that you can add AJAX and JavaScript into that mix. Web applications need people with database programming skills, too - so if you have MySQL on your CV, congratulations, you can consider yourself employable.

Security remains safe:Experts claim that IT security remains a safe sector, too.
"The Information Systems Audit and Control Association have identified information security officers and IT security and audit staff as the safest jobs in a recession," says Vernon Poole, Head of Business Consultancy for Sapphire Technologies Ltd. "2008 will go down as the year of the greatest number of security breaches - so protecting information is vital to be seen as 'trusted'".
One of the key reasons Poole identifies for these "breaches", are victims of the recession taking revenge, "People are losing their jobs," says Poole, "So the security checks and balances need to maintained because disaffected staff could be tempted to deliberately sabotage their former employers".
Some IT workers may be better off accepting shorter contracts - if their skills are sufficiently in demand. If your job is aimed at cutting costs, then you might be in luck, too, claims Paul Williams, IT Governance Adviser to Protiviti: "Staff involved in projects designed to enable short to medium term costs savings and efficiencies may be safe, at least until the project concludes, whilst staff involved with longer term strategic initiatives may be deemed more at risk."

Support and maintenance:

You'll also be safer if your job is making sure that everyday systems stay up and running. That's people like network administrators and IT maintenance staff. If your job involves tweaking HTML or looking after archives, though, watch your back. "Staff supporting business critical front line applications may be relatively secure whilst those supporting less critical applications may be deemed dispensable," says Williams.

Ironically, people at the lower end of the IT industry, those working in the trenches fixing PCs and installing software for home users are among the safest in the midst of recession. Most technology manufacturers are reporting a downturn in sales - which means there are more old machines in living rooms and spare bedrooms. And the older the machine, the more likely it is to need upgrades and repairs.

Not everyone sees a silver lining, though. "I don't think there are any safe jobs today!" says David Hobson, Managing Director of Global Secure Systems Ltd. "I would think anyone involved in 'future projects' will be particularly vulnerable, as businesses postpone new developments and focus on getting the maximum from current investments".

Even if you do find a P45 on your desk one Monday morning, take heart from the fact that recruitment agencies are still actively wooing the technorati, at a time when many other folks are contemplating a spell on Jobseeker's Allowance.
